A testbed for pre-commitment, not a finished product.
The prototype exists to make the research question tangible: what does voluntary digital pre-commitment feel like to use, and where does it break down?
Five design questions in software
Scheduling interface
How people express boundaries in advance — daily, weekly, or one-off protected periods.
Protection modes
Light, Strong, and Full SafeTime, and which one users actually choose.
Cool-off delay
Whether a short delay before changes take effect meaningfully supports intention.
Essential access
Which services users insist remain reachable, and how they configure them.
AI-suggested periods
Whether people accept, edit, or reject personalized protective-period recommendations.
The current SafeTime interface is a research prototype. True device-wide internet enforcement would require deeper operating-system integration, and several features described here are proposed rather than implemented.
