How SafeTime works

Decide once, calmly — and let that decision hold.

SafeTime is a proposed system for voluntary digital pre-commitment: users choose boundaries in advance, AI helps personalize them, and the device honours them.

The flow

From intention to protected time

  1. Decide
  2. Schedule
  3. SafeTime Activates
  4. Protected Period
  5. Connectivity Restored
Protection modes

Boundaries scaled to what the user chooses

Users select the level of protection themselves. Nothing is applied without explicit activation.

Light Protection

Block selected apps and websites.

Strong Protection

Restrict browsers and selected internet-enabled apps.

Full SafeTime

Temporarily restrict internet connectivity, subject to OS-level feasibility.

Cool-off delay

A user-selected delay between requesting a change and that change taking effect — giving the earlier intention time to be reconsidered rather than overridden instantly.

  • 15 minutes
  • 30 minutes
  • 1 hour
  • Until next scheduled window

Essential access

Safety comes first. Users whitelist the services that must remain reachable during every protected period.

  • Phone
  • SMS
  • Emergency services
  • Maps
  • Banking
  • User-selected essential apps

Why the operating system matters

App-level tools depend on permissions the user can revoke in seconds. Research into OS-level integration asks what responsible, consent-based enforcement would require — and what safeguards it must carry.

The current SafeTime interface is a research prototype. True device-wide internet enforcement would require deeper operating-system integration.
